When designing a new build home, a lot of thought goes into how to make what is essentially a “perfect” back drop into an “imperfect” home with character and personality. We love to take on the challenge of transforming a house into a home and are excited to share this “Modern Coastal” reveal with you!

Set in a classic Connecticut beach town, this recently built 4,400 sq ft home was beautifully completed in 2022. Keeping with the homeowner’s modern coastal aesthetic, we dove right into sourcing light, bright, family friendly soft furnishings while adding custom millwork throughout each room.
Our A La Plage paint collection was a huge source of inspiration when beginning the design process for this project. From coastal blue hues to crisp whites, we based most of our textile selections off this perfectly curated beach palette.
The natural daylight and oversized windows provided a beautiful backdrop for us to start with. In the living room, it was essential to balance both organic texture and modern lines. From the natural woven rug to the wall baskets, rounded cane chairs and pampas plumes, shiplap fireplace wall to acrylic mounted Lauren Martilla photography, the room transformed from white and boring to a true coastal oasis. I personally love the juxtaposition of the clean lined white piano with the soft blend ottoman.

Like with many newer homes, the open floor plan can sometimes be challenging when it comes to giving each space a defining moment. To tie in the subtle blues from living room to kitchen, we chose to highlight the kitchen nook to set the tone and act as the balancing act between both rooms. Could you just die over how it glows? In this space we selected Morning Mist for the millwork with a complimentary custom blue cushion by Rebecca Atwood and easy breezy Serena & Lily throw pillows.

The kitchen itself didn’t need any updating but it lacked character and function. The homeowner wished for her own space to sit at to get some work done but wanted it to look aesthetically pleasing and cohesive with the rest of the home. We, of course, got to work designing a one-of-a-kind built-in with John June Custom Cabinetry and wowwwweeeee!

With her desk created, we moved into his office and went for a moody old word vibe. The first order of business was drenching an existing built-in with our A La Plage Low Tide hue in high gloss then adding brass accents throughout.

By individualizing each space, the homeowner’s aesthetic and personality really shone through. To gather as a family in the dining room however, we opted for neutral furnishings and Coastline from our A La Plage paint collection to capture the space. Like with every project, I am true believer of adding greenery where possible and this gorgeous Olive tree and basket planter deserved to stand proud in this well-lit corner! Greenery makes any space pop, wouldn’t you agree?

When designing the primary bedroom, we simply updated the mantle and added a color drenched shiplap wall painted with our A La Plage Seascape hue. One of the design challenges in this space was how little room we had on the dedicated bed wall so we opted for smaller scale nightstands with sconces versus table lamps et voila!

The guest bedroom was adorned with a neutral wallpaper with a focus on a soothing, soft palette for a welcome escape when visiting this coastal beach house.

The love is so strong in this family of four, it’s palpable. The homeowners felt strongly about creating a dedicated kid space but keeping it still aesthetically pleasing in line with the rest of the home’s calming vibes. By adding a fun wallpaper accent wall, a place for dress up, playtime, lounge time and of course, reading nook, our design team accomplished their mission!

As I always say, it takes a village and this project was no exception. A big thanks to Polcer Home for their master craftsmanship and our vendors and trades that contributed to make this home the beautiful coastal oasis it is. And last but certainly not least, to my team and senior designer Mackenzie Pretty for leading the charge and executing the vision to perfection!
