My then fiance and I were in Mexico. A hotel staff member walked out onto the golf course and asked if we were Americans. Yes, we said. Please follow me, he said, and waved us into the hotel lobby where we watched horrified, on a television smaller than my laptop, our country under attack. At first, I thought it was a Bruce Willis movie. This can’t be real. And then it hit us like a ton of bricks. At the time, my dad worked in New York City and I kept trying to reach him. Our apartment was in the city and our friends were all there. I worked downtown and so did my fiance. How could this be happening? We immediately took on the impossible task of trying to re-enter the US and find a way home.

Days later, we arrived into the city and I’ll never forget the smell of smoke that engulfed every neighborhood. We kissed and parted ways as my fiance went to help set up emergency command centers for the governor, responders and helpers from all over. He came home crying every night for weeks.

This day and the many months that followed will never be forgotten. Ever. 25 years and I pray hard for the lives lost and the grief that is etched in our memories. I will also never forget the strong sense of community where each of us helped the next. The random acts of kindness, the hugs and smiles from strangers. The pride, the hurt and the sense of togetherness. America, you are beautiful.

25 years. Never forget. 🇺🇸
