Owning your own business comes with its highs and lows… lots of sacrifice both financially and personally but also lots of incredible moments of accomplishment. My dream has always been to share my passion for business with my children just like my dad did with me when I was younger. I remember interning for him and shadowing him through every meeting, business trip and event. He walked around with me like the proud father he was and I was in awe of his creativity, passion and mentorship. His team listened to every word he said with anticipation and he created a happy place to work. Being a strong and respected leader is not easy and he made it seem soooo easy.
I am so excited to share that this Summer, my eldest son has joined GLDESIGN as our intern (aka first assistant lol). From day one, we put him to work managing our warehouse, learning spreadsheets, creating content on canva, helping with client installs, hauling heavy sh*t, and filming for social media. It’s in the wearing-many-hats that you learn the best in my opinion so, trial by fire right? Today, as I sit on a flight bringing him on-site to one of our remote projects, I couldn’t be more proud of the man he is becoming.
Let’s think back to the Summer between your freshman and sophomore year in college. I know for sure that I didn’t know what my “career path” was. I knew I loved business but wow that’s a big umbrella… what part of business? They say you can’t learn a language thoroughly without traveling to the country to actually speak it with locals and understand the culture… well I’d say the same holds true for knowing what the heck you want to do with your life. That’s when I discovered marketing. This path of business opened my eyes to how to speak to consumers, learn about their habits and close deals. I carry all those learnings with me today with clients and am so grateful for the “real world” business sense I gained early on thanks to my dad.
After all, what is life if you don’t share your passion with others?
Not sure what the future holds for him but I do know that I will do my very best to show him all the world has to offer and guide him to a fruitful path that fuels his passion (no matter what that looks like for him). And for you? You’re not stuck friends. Thinking of switching careers? Remember to learn, absorb, shadow as much as you can and success will follow. Trust your gut! For now, I pinch myself knowing I am growing this business with my family and friends.
