Stephanie's Budget-Friendly Nursery

It’s safe to say I wanted to start designing my baby girl’s nursery the day I found out I was expecting! Being surrounded by design daily and having my first child on the way has made me so eager to get this project started. There is no denying the magic of a nursery – from the beautiful wallpaper, to the whimsical and charming details (like the tiny clothes hung up!) – I have been so excited to create a dream space for this little one.

When I thought about what to tackle first, I immediately started looking at furniture and decorative accents, and after spending some time researching, I realized I didn’t really know where to start, and not to mention how expensive my “dream nursery” could end up costing! Baby furniture can sure add up quickly. My goal is to create a space that aligns with our budget, while also reflecting our personality and style.

Here have been my first few steps:

Making a vision board. I know I want a tranquil, serene space for our little girl and for anyone that enters the room! When I think of tranquil, I think of whites, neutrals and soft colors. I began adding some inspo pictures of furniture and color options I found on Pinterest. While the furniture I select will be a clean and classic approach, I can see myself bringing in some aspects of a boho vibe through textiles and decor. You can see my vision board below!
Planning the layout of furniture and how to make the room functional. The layout of this room is tricky, as I have to take into account the sloped ceilings and alcoves. It’s also not a big room, so I want to make sure I am utilizing the space the best way possible. I am envisioning putting built-ins in the alcove space for extra storage.
Deciding on accents. I know I want to incorporate shiplap into the nursery design. I’m thinking of an accent wall where the crib is or changing area. Give me all the shiplap! I’d shiplap my entire house if I could… after all, I do work at GLDESIGN. I’d also like to add a statement ceiling light fixture to the room. We currently only have recessed lighting in the room, so this is something we need to have installed. I am still debating whether or not I want to use wallpaper. There are a few beautiful designs I have been eye-ing, but at the same time, I want to make sure this room embodies a clean, fresh feeling with a neutral palette. I want something that I won’t get sick of and want to change down the line. After all, I don’t think my husband will go for updating the entire aesthetic for the next child!
