Your coffee table is arguably one of the most dynamic pieces of furniture in your house, and styling can sometimes be a real design challenge! It sits in a room that is most frequently used and where life often unfolds, which means it should not be perfect but instead it needs to be intentional.
1. the base
There are so many different sizes, shapes and materials of coffee tables to choose from. Selecting the right piece for your space but also your everyday family lifestyle is critical. I personally love rectangular ottomans with soft corners for families with little ones (place an oversized tray on top for drinks or styling items) but for a more sophisticated living room I am obsessed with vintage woods.
2. height
Don’t hesitate to play with different heights with small or large vessels to create greater interest. Stack books, add florals… have fun! We love a large statement Demijohn so long as your table can accommodate it but also not obstruct the view.
3. layers
Add dimension to your coffee table with interesting vessels, books and layer styling items such as beads, wood knots or other specialized found items right on top. Each book should mean something to you (don’t just buy something at Home Goods because it has a pretty cover) and place the stacks in different directions to create that casual and asymmetrical look.
4. texture
There is nothing better than a sweet pot of flowers or greens on a coffee table. Florals add life to any space and it’s easy to switch out seasonally. Add faux stems or a gorgeous bouquet in that “wow where did you source that” vessel to create conversation!
